Fourteen Months a Ham

In the past fourteen months I have spoken to people in thirty-five countries, supported the operation of the Columbus Marathon, helped to coordinate efforts to respond to a simulated mass-casualty incident, and kept communities safe during tornadoes. In all of these cases I was able to participate because in December 2012 I became an amateur radio ("ham") operator. Since I acquired my amateur radio license I have trained in emergency communications, emergency response and operations, and handling of formal messages via radio.

Along the way I have had a lot of fun and it occurred to me that having a place to post my notes and some thoughts on amateur radio might be useful.
